First time computer setup



Step 1: Start

- Click on the "Start" menu.
- Click on "Settings".
- Click on "Control Panel".
- Double-click on "Dial-Up Networking".
- Double-click on "Make New Connection.

Step 2: Naming the New Connection

- Type in Prism Access.
- Make sure your correct modem is selected in the "Select a device" box.
- Click "Next".

Step 3: Telephone Number

- Type in the correct telephone number for your area. If the number is local, leave the Area code: field blank. You can find a list of dialup numbers here.
- Click on "Next".

Step 4: Finishing

- Click "Finish" to save your new connection to your Dial-Up Networking folder.

Step 5: Dial-Up Networking

- RIGHT click on the Prism Access icon you've just created.
- Click on "Properties".

Step 6: Verifying Phone Number

- If "Use country code and area code" is checked, uncheck it.
- Verify that the phone number is correct.
- Click on the "Networking" tab at the top.

Step 7: Networking

- Select only "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP".
- The Type of Dial-Up Server should be "PPP: Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME.

Step 8: TCP/IP Settings

- Select "Server assigned IP address".
- Select "Server assigned name server addresses".
- Click "OK".

Step 9: Security

- Click the "Security" tab.
- Type in your username in all lower case letters in the "User name:" field. Make sure you include @prism.net with your username.
- Type in your password in the appropriate case in the "Password:" field.
- It is suggested that no options be checked on this tab.

Step 10: Dialing

- Click on the "Dialing" tab.
- Check "This is the default Internet connection:".
- Select "Dial whenever a network connection is not present".
- Click on "OK".

Step 11: Create a Prism Access shortcut

- Right click on your newly created Prism Access Dial-Up Networking connection.
- Click on "Create Shortcut".

Step 12: Shortcut confirmation

- Click on "Yes" to create the Shortcut to Prism Access on your desktop.

Step 13: Connect to Prism Access

- Double-click on "Shortcut to Prism Access" to get the connection screen.

Step 14: Connecting to Prism Access

- Verify that your Login ID is entered correctly with all lower case letters in the "User name:" field. Make sure your username ends in @prism.net.
- Verify that the dial-up number is correct and is a local phone call for you.
- Click on "Connect" to establish a connection to Prism Access.
